Théâtre Catapulte

PROGRAMMATION

September 26, 2025 by lnsgd

For our English-speaking audience, performances with English surtitles will be available on November 20.

When we look everywhere, we look nowhere… One sunny day, Pernille left home without her shoes. Maybe she stopped to pick flowers? She always did that. As they wait for her to return, her big sisters scour the woods, searching for her, day after day, and their mother waits, slowly taking on the colour of the walls.

Co-produced by Théâtre l’Escaouette (Moncton) and Théâtre Catapulte (Ottawa), Les ensevelies plunges the audience in world between a fairy tale and a thriller. Wielding her words like a scalpel, author Caroline Bélisle explores the theme of feminicide in a way that allows beauty and resistance to grow when violence tries to take hold. “There’s a log of unidentified bodies It’s like a catalogue of the dead You can look at all the cadavers in case you recognize one that belongs to you.”

Durant des années

At the crossroads of contemporary drama and true crime podcasts, For Years immerses us in rural Quebec in 1999. An island village, lost in the middle of the Ottawa River, becomes the scene of the mysterious murder of a teenager. It is with the aim of answering the questions surrounding this tragedy that, twenty years later, a journalist returns to her hometown to unearth (and divert) this heavy past. But this research was without taking into account the traces left by this event on the small community. How far are we willing to go for glory? After all, maybe some things are meant to stay buried…

After Néon Boréal, the Théâtre du Trillium returns with a new creation, the first digital audio episode of which was presented at the Zones Théâtrales in 2019. In keeping with the avant-garde practices associated with it, the Théâtre du Trillium teamed up with the Théâtre Catapulte for ambitious formal research and designed an interactive scenography generated by artificial intelligence. Blurring the boundaries between human and machine, documentary aesthetics and fiction, For Years echoes a wary era of the media in which journalistic rigor and “fake news” just like truth and falsehood mingle. within the same fresco.

Alterindiens

Angel is a young man dreaming of writing the first successful indigenous science fiction book; as for Corinne, eleven years his senior, she is a young woman of Jewish origin who teaches indigenous literature at the university. One evening, without the shadow of a consultation, friends are invited to the couple’s table. The latter are the very image of all their contradictions, representing two social clichés at the extremes of each other: Angel’s indigenous radical activist “boyfriends” and Corinne’s intellectual environmentalist and vegan friends.

On the menu of this satire is a portrait of our irreconcilable cultural differences, moose meat and a vegan lasagna. Everything is therefore in place for the grand deployment of this situation comedy which allows us to thwart predetermined roles and open the door to a space of conciliation.

This show is in French, surtitled in English.

ODE (or the life after looking at the sun in the white of the eyes)

Visionaries in Arkansas claim that the moon has fallen out of its orbit — that it is heading straight for the earth, where it will collide in 24 hours. Not without a dose of humor, a pack of friends meet for a party with the theme of the end of the world, in the mad hope of short-circuiting the inevitable. The night settles and stretches, a precipice where all dreams and excesses are allowed. While the ritual was only a game at the beginning, little by little, the doubt settles in. What if tomorrow really is the end?

A choral piece, ODE questions the collective ritual of the party and the power of solidarity to resist cynicism and panic.

MANMAN LA MER (MANMAN THE SEA)

Manman la mer tells the story of Marjolaine, gifted with the power of knowing the future. Discouraged by her mother, the child suppresses her gift of clairvoyance. But twenty-six years later, dismayed by a mysterious and incurable disease, she has no choice but to travel to Haiti and rely on the good care of her grandmother, Manman la mè. Is she a midwife? A mystic? Or merely a simple grandmother full of love?

Manman la mer celebrates women and Haitian spirituality, joyfully exploring themes of mother-daughter relationships while shaking to the rhythm of traditional Haitian storytelling.

Manman la mer, by Haitian-born artist Djennie Laguerre, premiered in Ottawa in February 2020 just before the start of the pandemic. It has since been performed in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Saskatoon, Sudbury, Toronto and Montreal.
