Membrane

Membrane is the first queer science fiction novel in Chinese, written in 1995 by Taiwanese author Chi Ta-wei, a fervent defender of LGBTQ+ rights. The story takes place in a distant future where ecology is disrupted by capitalism and the earth’s surface is nothing more than industries and battlefields. Humanity had to settle in underwater cities where it could reconnect with the pleasures of the spirit and the flesh. Sexuality and gender have acquired a stunning fluidity. While identities and bodies are in constant metamorphosis, a fundamental question arises: what defines the human being?

After Olga Ravn’s Employees last season, Cédric Delorme-Bouchard continues his approach to stage writing around futuristic universes. The director and scenographer transposes this innovative text to the stage, in a sensitive adaptation by Rébecca Déraspe. Between shadow and light, dystopia and utopia, the piece performed by six exceptional performers explores with humanity the notions of identity and free will. A work with powerful resonance with today’s world.

In 2015, Jeffrey Alan Lash — who claims to be half human and half alien and works for the US Secret Service — is found dead in his car. Millions of dollars in weapons, ammunition, and cash are discovered in his garage. Fascinated by this event, a man flies to Los Angeles to investigate this mysterious individual. Crossing paths with the other skeptics who have gravitated towards Lash, he gradually discovers the multiple identities of the scheming fabulator. With help from interpreter Evelyne de la Chenelière, director Florent Siaud creates a hallucinatory thriller which reminds us that the powers of fiction are more fascinating and disturbing than ever in a world in constant flux.

ODE (or the life after looking at the sun in the white of the eyes)

Visionaries in Arkansas claim that the moon has fallen out of its orbit — that it is heading straight for the earth, where it will collide in 24 hours. Not without a dose of humor, a pack of friends meet for a party with the theme of the end of the world, in the mad hope of short-circuiting the inevitable. The night settles and stretches, a precipice where all dreams and excesses are allowed. While the ritual was only a game at the beginning, little by little, the doubt settles in. What if tomorrow really is the end?

A choral piece, ODE questions the collective ritual of the party and the power of solidarity to resist cynicism and panic.

MANMAN LA MER (MANMAN THE SEA)

Manman la mer tells the story of Marjolaine, gifted with the power of knowing the future. Discouraged by her mother, the child suppresses her gift of clairvoyance. But twenty-six years later, dismayed by a mysterious and incurable disease, she has no choice but to travel to Haiti and rely on the good care of her grandmother, Manman la mè. Is she a midwife? A mystic? Or merely a simple grandmother full of love?

Manman la mer celebrates women and Haitian spirituality, joyfully exploring themes of mother-daughter relationships while shaking to the rhythm of traditional Haitian storytelling.

Manman la mer, by Haitian-born artist Djennie Laguerre, premiered in Ottawa in February 2020 just before the start of the pandemic. It has since been performed in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Saskatoon, Sudbury, Toronto and Montreal.

LA JAMAIS SOMBRE (THE NEVER DARK)

The life cycle of a solar eclipse. A breach opens on cosmic and ancient times. A woman walks into unfamiliar territory. His wandering is driven by the desire to inhabit this invented place where irreconcilable borders converge. Is this the end or the beginning of a world?

The Never Dark is the manifestation of a poetics of light. A scenic writing led by three heads by the designer Marc Parent with the luminous architecture, the composer Michel F Côté with the sound environment and the choreographer-performer Catherine Tardif as guardian of the movement and the female body.

It is said that from the penumbra springs a more subtle, less utilitarian gaze or listening. Some awakenings are better done by candlelight than in broad daylight. In the depths of The Never Dark, perhaps we will perceive otherwise. Maybe we will see something else. Between grace and awe, the ancient mysteries of chiaroscuro are revealed the moment we realize that what we see may have been watching us all this time. Maybe…

Intrusions (Another Home Invasion)

A story shared by many couples and many families.

Alone on stage, a woman relates how she is waiting to be transferred to a seniors’ residence with her husband whose health is failing. The arrival of a drug addict, lurking mysteriously on her doorstep, emphasizes her vulnerability, and also her solitude, when confronted with various invasions of her private life and with the administrative challenges of the healthcare system. With humour, anger, and determination, she refuses to let age, circumstances or the system destroy her dignity and her love for her husband.

John MacLeod’s Another Home Invasion (Intrusions in it’s French translation) was nominated for a Governor General’s Award in 2009. The play sheds light on a subject too often neglected; the way our society abandons the elderly when they are most in need of help.
